On Sep 18, 2025, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Pakistan, in collaboration with the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), organized a seminar titled “Sovereignty and Constitution: Strengthening of the Statehood” held at National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad. The event was held to celebrate 2025 as the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty in Azerbaijan”, while also commemorating Azerbaijan’s victory in the Patriotic War of 2020, its restored independence, and complete sovereignty over once-occupied territories.
His Excellency Khazar Farhadov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, graced the occasion as the keynote speaker. Other distinguished speakers included Advocate Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Founding Partner and Member, ICC Court of Arbitration; Advocate Adil Aziz Qazi, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, Vice Chairman Islamabad Bar Council, Chair – The Society of Mediators (Pakistan Chapter), MCIArb, Chair – IDI, Partner – AAQ-LLP, Barrister Zopash Khan, Co-Chair – The Society of Mediators – IDI, Founder – SRLS, Accredited Mediator – MSOM, Partner – Pasha’s Associates & Consultants – AAQ-LLP, Founding President – HELP TO SMILE, Member – Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, Advocate Ms. Fariha Tahir Hassan, Founding Faculty Member of NUST Law School, currently teaching ADR at NUST Law School, and Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram, Executive Director of Pakistan Research Center for a Community with Shared Future (PRCCSF).
Advocate Ahmer Bilal Soofi hailed Azerbaijan for achieving its independence and underscored the importance of its Constitution and sovereignty as the foundation of statehood. He further emphasized the role of regional cooperation and the relevance of public international law in strengthening peace and security. Advocate Adil Aziz Qazi reflected on how the people of Pakistan can draw inspiration from Azerbaijan’s determination and resilience. He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s struggle and achievements offer important lessons in unity, sovereignty, and constitutionalism. Then, Mr. Khalid Taimur Akram delivered a speech highlighting the significance of organizing this event, emphasizing Azerbaijan’s remarkable resilience and bravery during the Patriotic War. He noted how Azerbaijan has transformed itself from a war-torn country into a nation achieving remarkable development, particularly in the Karabakh region, which now stands as a symbol of recovery, progress, and national strength. He also underlined the deep affection of the Azerbaijani people for the people of Pakistan, reaffirming the brotherly ties that unite both nations. Following these speeches, Barrister Zopash Khan highlighted the special importance of this year for Azerbaijan, noting that it is the symbol of resilience, sovereignty, and national pride and lastly Advocate Fariha Tahir Hassan began by defining the concepts of constitution and sovereignty, linking them to Azerbaijan’s experience in the aftermath of the Patriotic War of 2020. She celebrated Azerbaijan’s progress and highlighted how these principles have been reinforced through its recent history.
The seminar, which was attended by nearly 150 students, faculty members, and honorable guests, underscored the significance of constitutionalism, sovereignty, and statehood in strengthening Azerbaijan’s national identity and independence. The speakers reflected on Azerbaijan’s historic struggle for liberation, emphasizing the resilience of the Azerbaijani nation and the leadership that ensured the restoration of its territorial integrity.
In his concluding remarks, His Excellency Ambassador Khazar Farhadov commended Pakistan for its consistent support of Azerbaijan and reiterated the deep-rooted brotherly ties between the two nations. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where the audience particularly students interacted with the Ambassador and other speakers on themes of sovereignty, law, and regional cooperation.
The event reaffirmed the shared values of Azerbaijan and Pakistan in upholding sovereignty, constitutionalism, and mutual solidarity for peace and progress.
